Pool Nets and Pool Covers Save Lives! Make Sure Your Pool is Safe

If you think pool covers, nets, or fences are a waste of time and money, consider this:  most drownings of children age one to four occur in a home swimming pool.  Of these children, most were last seen inside the home by a parent, sibling, family member, or friend and had only been out of sight for less than five minutes.  Most were under the care of one or both parents when they drowned.  Why don’t more people take measures to keep their swimming pools secure?

We never think it can happen to us; it always happens to other people.  Our children know not to go in the pool without us; they wouldn’t do that.  Unfortunately, no home is immune, but we can all take measures to increase the safety of our pools.  Whether you have an above or in ground pool, you can easily find the right fit for your needs.  One of the most popular safety measures is to use a cover, which come in net, mesh, or solid. Which is right for you?

If you have children in your home, or family members or neighbors with children who visit, a net cover will be perfect for preventing accidents.  These are also great if you have an atypically shaped pool, fish or garden pond, or other sources of water.  Look for a net that is made from a high density polyethylene material.  This ensures that the net will last and support a child if he should be tempted to take an unsupervised dip.

One drawback that some people notice with a net is that debris, such as leaves and sticks, can enter the pool through the small holes in the netting.  This can be solved by simply having a good filter and taking a few minutes to clear out such debris before swimming.  You can then drain and cover the pool in the winter and keep your pool looking and functioning perfectly.

When looking for the right cover for your pool, make sure that you choose one that adds to the safety of your yard even more.  Choose a net that features flush deck fixtures and adjustable height round surface plates.  The fixtures lie flush against your deck and the surface plates are smooth so you don’t have to worry about stepping on painful obstructions, stubbing toes, or getting scrapes and scratches.  You’re going to want to walk barefoot around your pool, so it only makes sense to choose a cover with these features.

Safety is the number one concern and priority, but you should also consider convenience and appearance.  Look for a net that has an easy rolling unit for storage and one that is installed and removed easily.  The advantage of net covers is that they allow you to have the least amount of visual obstruction to your yard.  If you have worked hard to have a beautifully landscaped pool area, a net allows this to shine through while thoroughly protecting your family and friends.

If you have a backyard pool, you know the fun and enjoyment your family can get out of long summer days.  To make sure all your pool memories are happy ones, get a net cover as soon as you install your pool.  It is more than worth it.
