There are over ten million swimming pools in the United States alone. It is no wonder that they are so popular: everyone can enjoy the soothing water, as well as benefit from the opportunities for exercise. They are wonderful for anyone with back pain or injuries because they provide weightless exercise and relief from pressure. And they are tremendously fun. Before you go for a swim, make sure you have all the pool supplies you need. The most important? A safety fence.

While pools are great additions to any home, they can also be very dangerous for families with young children. The statistics alone are enough to make you hesitant to own a pool, but having a good fence dramatically reduces your risk of accidental drowning. Many people, though well aware of the risk, believe that pool accidents won’t happen to them. After all, they watch their children vigilantly while they are using the pool so nothing happens. They’re safe, right?

Of children who have drowned in swimming pools, forty-six percent were last seen in the house; the parents of fifteen percent of those children thought their children were napping. An additional twenty-three percent were last seen in the yard or porch well away from the pool area. Why are these statistics important? Because they tell us that while you may do a great job of keeping your child safe while you are watching him in the pool, you are not always able to be there. Children can sneak off when you have your back turned. If you leave your child in his room for a nap and are vacuuming in another room, how easy is it for your child to go out the door without you noticing? If you are tending to another child or taking a phone call, is it possible that your child will wander off to the pool? It is more than possible: children are inquisitive, and children love pools. Despite all our warnings, they may very well go there without our consent. This is why fences are crucial.

Make sure you choose a fence that is high enough to prevent your child from climbing over and that it has a strong, durable self-latching closure. In order to be effective, this closure must be out of reach for your child. Keep yard furniture, toys, and other objects away from the fence so your child will not be able to use them to climb on.

There are other safety measures you can take to ensure that everyone has fun in the sun and enjoys the pool. Keep all cleaners and equipment away from children. Put them in a garage or shed after use to prevent accidents and injuries. You will also want to invest in a safety vacuum release system (SVRS). This is a device that turns off drains when something obstructs them. This can literally be a lifesaver; children (and adults) can become stuck or suctioned onto these drains if they do not have the proper safety mechanisms. Once stuck, it is extremely difficult to become free; sometimes the pulling force of several adults is not enough. The SVRS does not interfere with the pump or filters, and once installed, it should not require any maintenance.

There is a lot to consider when you decide to get a swimming pool and precautions you should take, but you can take effective steps to ensure that a good time is had by all and that no one in your family becomes a statistic.
