Keep Your Eyes On The Kids

Florida has the highest unintentional drowning rate in the nation for children ages 1-4 with the numbers increasing each year. The Florida Department of Health has initiated a Drowning Prevention Campaign. Part of their campaign is the Water Watchers Pledge which is:

To Help protect children from drowning I will...

Constantly watch the children who are in or near water and keep them within reach.

Give this tag to another adult who agrees to actively watch the children if I need to leave for any reason.

Make sure rescue equipment is easily accessible. Keep telephone and emergency numbers with me.

Latch gates, lock doors, use alarms and create two or more barriers to the pool, spa or any water.

Once I leave the water, I will make sure a child cannot return without my knowledge.

One of the key components of the pledge is creating two or more barriers to the pool. This is so important because kids do wonder away from parents. And while adult supervision is absolutely necessary, the barriers are just as necessary. The Pool Guard Pool Fence with the self closing, self latching gate provide the barrier to help keep kids safe from drownings. Drownings Are Preventable and the safety pool fence or nets can help parents keep kids safe, which is what it is all about!

Clayre Foundation

The summer months are in full swing, and many people turn to pools as a way to beat the heat. One valley family is working to help keep your loved ones safe.
Clayre Rukavina, only 1-year-old, drowned in her family pool just one day before her father planned on installing a pool fence in their backyard. She's just one of two children who have drowned so far this year, along with several near drownings.

To stop another child from losing their life so tragically, the Rukavina family is joining forces with the Nevada Community Foundation, UNLV, and Safe Kids to raise money to help families who can't afford pool fences. Joe Rukavina says although his daughter won't grow up to change the world, in death his daughter is leaving behind a legacy of the Clayre Foundation, which will help stop kids from drowning in pools. Clayre's family and the organizations partnering with them have already gathered a list of people who can't afford pool fencing.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the number of kids drowning in pools is on the rise. That's why safety advocates say pool fencing isn't enough. They are encouraging parents to take safety and drowning prevention courses along with CPR. So if the unthinkable happens, parents are prepared to deal with it.

Conversations Can Save Lives!

I was speaking with a developer/ builder in Puerto Rico and he mentioned that a friend of his nephew’s was in the hospital due to a pool injury. I asked what kind of pool injury and he said it was a near drowning while at a friends house. We spoke briefly about the child’s condition and some of the ways it could have been prevented. I reminded him that we have Pool Guard Pool Safety Fencing and Nets and that it would be a good idea to consider that as a viable option for their home. The gentleman responded, "I will give you his number, but I have a pool at my house and I would like to have a fence or net put in immediately as I have grand kids and fear they may fall in the pool." We went to his house yesterday and took measurements and we have the correct amount of fence in inventory and the install will occur on Monday. Amazing how casual conversations can save lives!
